World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's stats base increases as it is upgraded. This value is the total of all its upgraded perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that need to be modified to upgrade an item.
It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear as PvP is restricted at lower levels. The average level of the item is listed on the character sheet.
When deciding whether to buy or sell equipment players can look at the level of an item. It's a sign of the item's condition and quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when looking at a vendor's inventory.
The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are several theories on how the item level calculation is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a number that comes from a formula which calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values, and also that sockets have gems that increase the value of the item overall. Item Stats
The item's stats can make or break an item for players. The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of finding items, the properties spawned on loot drops and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is especially useful for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each level and can be further increased by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to increase the luck of an item, up to 140.
Furthermore there are certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased by so much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..
The luck of an item can influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an overall success rate of 25 percent, and each item with Luck increases this chance by 5percent.
Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects can be obscured by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
